I agree that you should try to use the curriculum whenever possible with your middle and high school students. They will need help learning all their vocabulary words from academic classes. My students seem to like crossword puzzles and bingo games that I make using their classroom vocab. edhelper.com is a good website for this - some activities don't require a subscription but others do (I think it's worth the money). I've also tried to help with vocabulary development by teaching strategies such as context clues and knowledge of prefixes and suffixes. You can use their textbooks for some of this, or buy workbooks in a teacher supply store. Multiple meaning words are also very challenging for them, and again there are many workbooks for working on this. Some of the students will probably have goals relating to understanding and use of figurative language. I think that Superduper has a figurative language game (though most Superduper materials are geared toward younger kids), and linguisystems.com has quite a bit of material for teaching this, including a new No Glamor - Idioms book which I'm going to order. I don't do games that much, but older kids still enjoy playing them once in a while. Scattergories is always popular, as is Language Burst (from linguisystems.com). I make up Jeopardy and Trivial Pursuit-type games using questions related to their classwork as well as grammar questions and general knowledge questions. Communicate (a game) is especially useful for kids on the autism spectrum or with nonverbal learning disabilities. Your school might also have subscriptions to Time For Kids or Scholastic Action, which are weekly or monthly magazines for students. These publications have different levels and they are good for comprehension, summarizing and paraphrasing practice, new vocabulary, and general knowledge. News-2-You is excellent, but it's expensive and it might not be right for your students. Get to know them first, and check out the sample News-2-You publications, before you subscribe. Hope this helps.
