I think I was the original poster that you were talking about...
I started a book program for my artic. students about three years ago and LOVE it. Parents and students both have also given great feed back.
This is how I do it.....
1) I got some great books from scholostic. You can get them from 3-6 dollars a piece. I also have parents donate books, go to garage sales, etc.... Another good way to get started is to have your school PTO provide a mini grant. My PTO supplies me with $50.00 to spend at the school book fair every year!
(I go through and hi-light the target words within each book. Only one sound per book. I then put a sticker on the back of the book letting me know the target sound.)
2) I bought some great and rather big book bags from REALLY GOOD STUFF-Reading. I write speech and Language and my name on it to ensure the book gets returned to me.
3) I also have a homework sheet that goes home with every book. It gives the directions and a place for a listener to sign. The student must read the book up to three times before it is returned...then they can earn points toward a prize.
4) I have a sign out sheet in each students folder so I can keep track of who has what book.
5) I keep all of my books in baskets in my room labeled for the target sound. Kids come in and pick out a book, get a homework sheet and bag, then sign it out.
I am so happy to hear that you liked the idea! I have seen good progress by doing this...It is also a great time saver...I rarely have to make copies.
Please let me know if you have any other question.
Lisa
