L is a very visible sound, so be sure to use a mirror. Use a tongue depressor or something to touch the spot on the alveolar ridge where he needs to put his tongue to make the sound. Give these tactile and visual cues for him. Model the placement and isolated sound. You can have him practice putting his tongue up and holding it there by using a cheerio or very small bit of candy or cake decorating pieces. He must hold the piece up on the "l" spot for a bit. Give him a hand signal for tongue tip up also. It will come, it takes time.
