I have had a set of brothers that did it and it turned out to be one of the easiest /r/'s to fix. At the end, they end with and /i/ sound which actually has the lateralization and elevation needed for the /r/, just too far forward and not enough tension. I had them practice the /i/ and think about where their tongue was (it was a kindergarten student). We then slid our tongue back "1 tooth" and tighten up their tongue. He managed to get it quite easily.
