I have a child who substitutes /l/ for prevocalic /r/. It definitely affects intelligibility! Although he can not produce /r/ accurately, I have him practice words with an approximation. It sounds almost like /w/. While it is not perfect, it is more intelligible. We'll work on a perfect /r/, if necessary, when he is a little older. I would try this if I were you. A schwa vowel would be closer than 'ay'.
