With a tough k/g kid, I recently used my gloved pointer finger (instead of a tongue depressor) to hold just the very front tip of his tongue. He still had difficulty getting the back of his tongue high enough to contact the velum, so we also played around with different jaw heights-- I'd say "Open your mouth really wide, now close it a little bit and hold it there", then I'd put my gloved finger on his tongue tip while his mouth was already patially closed. It took about 6 individual sessions to get the sound in isolation, but once he got it he immediately started using the sound in sentences! Good luck
