I have also used the "Cheerio Down" exercise from Sara Rosenfeld Johnson. The straws for base of tongue retraction also work well.
Can the student discriminate between /k/ and /t/ and /g/ and /d/?
You can also use the tongue depressor on the tip of the tongue and try pushing the tongue back and up...
