I do the tongue depressor technique as well and that is all I use, but I also think using the finger cue and pushing the lips out to make the 'sh' sound helps in the beginning. It also pulls your cheeks in and helps to remind you to lift the sides of your tongue.
Final 'sh' has always been easier for me and target it in words, not isolation. I never work on isolation as they aren't typically going to produce it that way anyway. Go right to final 'sh' words and it should work.
