I really want to second the idea that you should be able to make the sound when smiling. I inherited two students who were working on /sh/ from another therapist who had obviously emphasized lip rounded because they both made the sound with exaggerated rounding that looked very unnatural. The first thing I worked on with both of them was making the sound while smiling.
In addition to the fact that rouding is not necessary to produce the sound, it is also difficult, if not impossible (depending on how extreme the lips are rounded), to see what your tongue is doing if your lips are rounded.
