I feel the same in some regards and have been in the field for 25 years. At the same time I never expected to do the same job I was trained for and have enhanced my knowledge and professional development over time and am happy I did. After so many years of doing exactly the same thing with the same populations it was somewhat mundane and I felt unchallenged. I enjoy working with special populations now in conjunction with my typical caseload and feel it has helped me transition to a speech therapist of the "new millenium". There is no point in venting, since these kids are not going away. Our district hired an autism behavioral consultant that has taught us to much and I am able to apply my skills from "back in the day" to the current day. Even though I consider myself to be seasoned, it kind of upsets me to hear slps complain. I mean we are not the only ones that are having to expand our range of populations. We are the ones trained in language aquisition and development and articulation and communication. Id consider us the most knowledgeable in this domain. If special area teachers such as art, gym, music, etc. teach these kids as part of their appropriate education than we have no buisness complaining.
My daughter is in grad school for speech now and her curriculum encompasses so many areas that I wish ours had. Its not that our jobs are not the same jobs we trained for, THE ENTIRE FIELD HAS EXPANDED AND CHANGED COMPLETELY AND IS SUPPORTED BY ASHA.
I just dont get how people can complain about being asked to up the anty and work with new populations that require language and speech and communication treatment that is part of our ethical code.
