You couldnt have said it better and finally someone has also acknowledged the neglected aspect of our current modern day field, Speech LANGUAGE pathologists. Language is in every aspect of our students' life and it is up to be creative enough to utilize any given curriucular material and adapt it so that we are meeting language based goals. We do not have the background to teach critical aspects of reading/decoding strategies, but we are very capable of addressing the comprehension aspect. If a child cannot comprehend the story how is he able to recall details, sequence, etc?
I once worked in a HS and was using the Biology curriculum as a guide to meet my student's IEP goals in vocab, auditory recall, etc. I used alot of visuals and collaborated with the classroom teacher. My students were able to keep up the pace with their typical peers and appreciated the double exposure of the curriculum while strengthening their langauge skills. That is what I call true collaboration, generalization and carryover.
