To Dawn...thank you. I am in complete agreement with you (not the first time, either!).
No one expects that the PT will have her students up out of their wheelchairs and walking. Many of my students have neurologically based learning/language disabilities and I'm supposed to be the miracle worker??? Progress isn't enough...my outcome had better be "normal", and by golly, if I write the goals up the right way that's what we'll get! Oh boy. I've even had another SLP tell a parent that I should be able to "rewire" her daughter's brain! Right. I'll get right on that.
I also agree that we should be helping the kids with sound errors. Those of us who live in rural areas don't have many private practice SLP's to refer to, and unfortunately, in this economy not many of my students parents could afford it anyway. The fuel prices even made it difficult for folks around here to transport their kids to the free clinic at the university.
I attended a Pam Marshalla conference last year. In her presentation, she immitated some of her severely apraxic, phonological, and artic kids. Guess who could translate for her?? If you've guessed that it was the SLP who has been working with these kids for 25 to 30 years you're right! There is absolutely no substitute for your experience. None. The rest of us in the room were absolutely amazed.
This website that Pat created for us has been a true blessing for me. The help and support I find here is truly appreciated.
