Ive read all the posts and just wanted to provide an opposing view...I guess I would consider myself fairly new and have been in the schools for 6 yrs, and consider myself to have had multiple opportunities, autism, tbi, selective mutism, cleft palate, cochlear implant etc. To be honest, revert back to our title "Speech language pathologists" i do see the term language in there that most older slps in my district try to avoid...i am aware that when most ppl got masters degrees in speech the program highly emphasized articulation..back in the 70s kids that were disabled were educated at home or in special schools, look how far we have come in terms of law and FAPE..the more i see it is that artic is being phased out and should be dont privately..artic does not hinder ones ability to be educated nor impact education..artic is fine to do if a child is already getting services for a language based related issue.. I feel like the newer slps are working harder and are faced with more challenges than the old timers were/are..it seems as if the older ones do not want to get their hands dirty and have gotten pretty cozy at their job over the years being couped up in a small room alone...changes are coming our way and it seems that more and more disabled children are being educated in the school system with their neurotypical peers and services are going to be provided in their natural environment (clasroom) to promote generalization and assist them with their language based needs in a contextual naturalistic environment...Im sorry if i am being harsh but to be honest im sick of the older slps complaining..in 6 yrs in the school system ive learned that education and the way in which services are provided will constantly change and the pendulum will continue to swing either way..if older slps are complaining with change and having more demands then maybe it is time to retire. I dont know any field where one expects to do the same job/responsibilities for their entire career..in terms of behavior, i hear what you are saying, and yes at times I feel that we are dumped on..but think that we have these kids a few times a week for at most 30 min sessions, when their teachers and specialty teachers (music, art, etc) have them for longer amounts of time..for some reason the older slps have this entitlement that they should not have to be asked to think outside the box and change with the times...think about all of the things general education teachers have had to change, GET OVER IT
