I like Jen's ideas. I would be tempted to add a couple additional thoughts: 1) the safety of everyone in the school (... keeps me and others safe...), and 2) permission to feel proud of self (... and I can feel proud that I helped everyone stay safe...)
I happen to have a student who has a similar behavior. He tends to run from A to B whenever he needs to go to another location if there is no one in front of him. He also happens to have a tremendous need to move; AKA hyperactivity. His teacher and I have come up with some ideas for replacement behaviors. Our brainstorming came up with: 1) carrying something 'heavy'; when going through the hallways he will be asked to carry a class mascot-sytle item in a container that will require two hands and be heavy enough to discourage bouncing and/or swinging it.
2) within the classroom giving him movement directions such as "tiptoe to your cubby walk toe-heel back to me" or "sidestep over to your desk and skip back here".
The best match will happen when the reason for the behavior is met by the replacement behavior and thus fulfill the same need for the child.
