I agree with Laure, you have to find a motivator. Often times, I use food (one tiny bite at a time). Some children with autism don't like food, but all of them seem to love bubbles. I use boardmaker PECS and train them to give me the PEC and then they get the reward. Yes, I have to do hand-over-hand to start, until they do it on their own. I have one child who has a very difficult time controlling his negative behaviors (i.e. hitting, kicking, throwing). I do behavior mod with him by showing him the PEC "hands in your lap" and when he complies, I give him a candy and immediately say "hands in your lap" showing him the visual PEC. I sometimes have to physically put his hands in his lap and also say "Ready to work" to teach him how he should be when sitting at the table. Yes, it's a slow process, but I do make progress. You can also use a visual timer which shows the child when work time is up and then they can request a break (using PECS of course). I hope this helps!
