I would look for a motivator. Something that makes him attend, laugh or respond in some way. I have found music to be a great motivator and seems to get them engaged. I love the cd called Jellybeans. I can't remember the creator but it's an OT from Australia. The kids love it and I'm able to get signs{ music or more} when the kids want to hear a song. Then I made picture cards to go with all the songs so the kids have to choose which song they want to hear. Lots of visuals are important for autistic kids. Good luck!
