Nevada (7-10) 14 - UNLV (11-7) 6
I’m sure this one is a grudge match. They should play each other more often in my book. In any event the Pack won this round. In an even match in which Nevada scored nine runs in the last two innings, Nevada showed that they might be finding their bats after all in getting 18 hits against a more than decent Vegas team. They were able to rough up all pitchers except the final Rebel one who pitched only the final out so he doesn’t count. Now here’s an interesting topic. He pitched the final out BUT he gave up a hit also. He gets credit for no runs allowed but does he really? The previous pitcher pitched 1.1 innings and got stung for 3 earned runs. Without knowing the answer, if the other pitcher gives up the hit that scores them all (in other words, inherited runners), should he get stung for some of those runs also? Must draw the line somewhere so, no, he doesn’t. “Inherited runners” is critical in this day and age and you know that if you follow baseball closely. You’re brought in with runners on most of the time and you shut the door just about all of the time. You’re considered a very valuable commodity even if you don’t have the ERA, the big fastball, or win-loss record to show it. Get my drift here? Here’s what happened in this game: The final pitcher inherited a runner at first and the first batter he faces doubles to drive in the final run credited to the previous pitcher and the batter is thrown out at third trying to stretch the hit into a triple. So the guy is credited with no runs and got no one out at all, really. Ain’t baseball great?! Highlight? Shaun Kort, my star to watch with Nevada, went 3-4 with 4 RBIs. All this before just under 600 fans in Vegas.
SJS (14-3) 31/12 - Chicago State (1-18) 1/2
I don’t really want to go into this other than to say that the frosh got a chance to play. They should have come down to Hill and face our stud. I think we would have done better. This is more sad than anything. I checked a little and they are D1 but I really don’t get this. Is this a school like an Ivy League school? I suspect it is. I think MIT has a team also and they’re not too good either I’d guess. Let’s move on. Dartmouth next. Go ahead, tell me their colors? Hint: They’re called the Big Green. They are 0-3 and a member of the Ivy League. I actually think they might give our boys in blue a game since they’ve played decent teams closely. Hmm, 0-3 and a short schedule for the year. Weather a problem? Not a problem but you can’t play baseball in it. I have a nephew who went to school there and winter sports are big. Baseball? You mean the Red Sox?
Well, folks, changes are in the wind. I leave for Costa Rica tomorrow but I hope to make a few more posts before I go. When I get back I will start posting on the other new site and everything I hear says it will be run well. Look for me there in April. Go Spartans!
