LaTech (9-5) loses two out of three to Southern Miss (11-5)
The Eagles definitely got their talons into the backs of the Bulldogs in the second game of the set. 24-3 means no pitching and no hitting. Jeb Stefan was the starter and I suspect he will now be off the WAC list of top pitchers in the conference. 2.1 IP and 6 earned runs with 5 walks and 0 strikeouts. Five walks! Thirteen total for the staff that day along with the 18 hits adds up to, oh, you get it, don’t you? Ol’ Miss (that ought to piss ‘em off) scored in every inning and I don’t know what this says about an improved LaTech team. Just under 3000 for this game. Dylan Moseley went seven strong innings giving up one earned run in getting the win (3-1) in the dogs’ only win of the series. Moseley is a good one.
Hawaii (10-6) sweeps Loyola Marymount (8-11)
In sweeping Loyola the Rainbows are now on a seven game winning streak and are officially hot. It’s still a couple of weeks away, I know, but guess who they open the season with? The boys in blue travel to Hawaii to take on probably a very hot team to start the WAC season in earnest. The game of note was the 9-5 win in which Jared Alexander pitched. He went five innings giving up 0 earned runs. It appears as if he’s back. They averaged 2600 in attendance for all the games. That’s the Spartans’ season attendance if I’m not too far off base. Anyway, the ‘Bows are peaking at the right time.
NMSU (15-2) takes three of four from Northern Colorado (6-11)
The Aggies continue with the long ball by hitting (by my count) ten more homeruns in the four game series. Pitching of note was Sebastien Vendette’s attempt at a complete game. He pitched eight innings but gave up seven earned runs. I guess you can say goodbye to him on the WAC pitcher list also. Attendance at NMSU was about 300 a game.
Nevada (6-10) splits the four game series with Oregon (8-8)
The game one victory marked Nevada coach Gary Powers’s 800th career win. Stephen Bautista, Wolfpack starter, only went 1.1 innings giving up 2 earned runs. Why he was removed so quickly is unknown. The games were highlighted by their closeness mostly with only the 3-0 Oregon victory being by more than one run. About 700 saw each of these games.
Sac State (6-8) takes 2 of 3 from UC Davis (3-12)
In the final game won by the Hornets, starter Tommy Elrod went the distance in winning 10-1 and striking out 5 and walking none. Great game by the ol’ pitcha.
Fresno (10-5) takes two in their own tournament agains Bakersfield (4-10) and Buffalo (7-8)
It looks like the Bulls of Buffalo (what an imaginative name for a mascot) have (has?) spent most of their season playing the mutts. They are 0-4 this year in two separate series. Oh well, they’re pitching stayed home in two of the games. In those two games they gave up 42 runs and scored 4. A complete lack of competition I’d say. Jake Floethe continues his good year on the mound (now 3-0) by going 6 innings and giving up next to nothing before 2900 fans. Some tournament (sarcasm here).
SJS (11-3) takes 2 of three from CS Northridge (6-10)
Scott Sobczak had arguably the best game of the season in shutting down the Matadors in game 3 6-1. He gave up 6 hits in going 7 innings but appeared to be in control the entire time he was in the game. Must have had his ground ball pitch working. Good to see. In winning game two Max Peterson got the win (3-0) but it got pretty sweaty at the end. Ahead 6-1 at the end of 6 1/2 innings, the Spartans had to hold on to win 6-5 with Anthony Vega getting the save in a not so good appearance to close it out. However, he did strike out the side in his one inning but gave up two runs to make it close; too close. Oh well, even Rob Nenn did that a bit too much for me. Attendance was in the 200 range for the games.
Next up three with Chicago State starting tomorrow at Muni. I hate to be too critical but it doesn’t appear the Cougars have much bite in them. Ever seen an old cat with no teeth? Not pretty. It looks like a combination of no hitting nor pitching and a pretty tough schedule. They are hitting .234 as a team and the ERA is an astounding 13.87. They have two hitters of any consequence; Patrick Hernandez and Austin McDowell hitting .378 and .333 respectively. No power anywhere as they have gone deep only three times (sound familiar? See what good pitching can do?). William Lawrence leads the staff with an ERA of 3.75 and a record of 1-0 which is the team’s only win on a dismal beginning of a 1-15 season.
By the way, I know I have a readership that must number in the thousands but I’ll be gone starting the 20th and won’t return until the 30th. I’ll be in Costa Rica enjoying the volcanoes, hummingbirds, and long hikes with my family and friends. So, I’ll be out of touch for awhile but don’t wait up since I will be back just in time to preview the WAC season and to see if I can determine how to get the boys in blue back to Omaha.
