SJS had the one of the best pitching staffs last year and they continue this year. Notice the ERA is almost a half a run better than NMSU which is big spread and they’ve given up over 40 less hits than the Aggies. In college ball (aluminum bats) a 5.00 or lower team ERA is ok but not great so SJS, NMSU, and Fresno look to have good pitching the rest of the way. I still have doubts about NMSU in all regards. The WAC season will prove who’s right. SacState is really dragging but has been joined at the bottom by LaTech and Nevada. There’s quite a gap between Hawaii and the bottom three. I don’t expect much from the Hornets but we’ll see from the other two.

Hawaii - Sam Spangler (what a great neame) is leading the league with a sparkling zip for an ERA. Pretty good even for 14 IP. Not making the list from Hawaii is last year’s big pitcher Jared Alexander who is getting ready to pitch some innings. He has 8 this year and also has a 0.00 ERA. Spangler has more strikeouts than IP which is always great. Kramer and Klein (law offices at your services)have lots of innings to go with pretty good ERAs. They have the makings of a good staff. Once Alexander comes back at full health, Hawaii will be a team to be reckoned with.
NMSU - Vendette a senior from Canada (the country, not the local JC) and Simon, a transfer from Lassen CC, are the leaders for NMSU. The quality in their starters falls off dramatically after these two so we’ll see.
Fresno - Jake Floethe is a sophomore RHP who has come into his own after a freshman year of limited action. Will he be the ace? Could be but they already have one in Holden Sprague, a senior right-hander with an ok ERA (4.04) last year who figured to be the dude this year, and he has.
LaTech - Dylan Moseley has already won one WAC pitcher-of-the-week award and may win more. This senior rightie has been drafted by major league teams in each of the last two seasons so he is something special. I always think it’s best to stay and learn the game but how do you say no to dollars? Money doesn’t talk, it swears, someone once said. Jeb Stefan is a freshman RHP who has come out of the chute throwin’ and has a great southern name, don’t ya think?
SacState - Sophomore Brandon Sandoval is the leader of a mediocre to poor pitching staff. Jeff Roth (not listed) is having a good year with limited innings but the rest of the staff will have to improve.
Nevada - A junior JC transfer who has fit in well for the Pack but doesn’t have the wins to show it. That lack of hitting stuff is the difference. Brock Stassi is a sophomore leftie and one of the few on the list.
SJS - Now we’re talkin’ lefties. Both Max Peterson and David Berner are lefties who are doing well their senior seasons as I’m hoping they feel the sense of urgency that a senior should feel on a potentially great team. Max did well enough last year to warrant second-team All WAC and is looking at a higher category if he keeps it up. Berner has, to me, been a pleasant surprise and I/we hope he keeps it up.
Final notes. I know that the Spartans best pitchers are JC transfers which is just fine but when all of your good players are JC transfers, you’re talking about a program that can’t get freshmen to come to your school. That means you have a program that will always be scrambling to fill holes as the transfers are quickly gone. I’m talking about NMSU here and they have trouble recruiting as well as scheduling difficulties for a variety of reasons. It’s not a dirty program, it’s just hard to get frosh to go there.
