The above are edited versions that can be seen completely at WAC website. Some comments are in order here.
SJS is in the middle of the pack which says the boys in blue can hit but with no power (4 HR), which is no surprise. I’m sorry folks, but that’s the way it’s going to be and going to watch the SF Giants will not improve the power shortage. NMSU is leading in hitting and has an astounding 34 homeruns. I’d love to visit their home park during a game or two to see what the Hell is going on there. Small park? Wrigley Field type wind? Sacramento State, as poorly as they’ve been doing, is hitting surprisingly well, but more on the implication of that later. Nevada players are still staring at their bats wondering what do you do with these things. They bring up the rear by a full twenty points.
On an individual basis let’s look at the names.
NMSU - is dominating the team as well as individual stats. Junior Leo Aguirre is leading and tied for second in homeruns. Wow. At 6’0” and 230 lbs he ain’t built for speed. Farnham is a senior catcher who came in as a junior transfer from a CA JC. Reynoso is a junior infielder and is a newcomer from Canada College. Shaver is one of the JC transfers from WA I mentioned a long time ago. Marquez is a senior from a JC in WA. Sodders is JC transfer from Oklahoma by way of his home in California. Transfers are playing a large role in the Aggies hitting. The Aggies are clubbing other teams into submission in getting to their 12-1 (I think) mark. Not ranked as far as I know so many people are non-believers just like me.
SACSTATE - Tim Wheeler is leading his team in hitting as a junior and as a sophomore outfielder was a first team WAC designee. He is continuing his excellent ways. His teammate Crosby is a senior infielder.
FRESNO - Danny Muno continues to impress after last year’s dream season for the WAC freshman of the year. Ahmady is also hitting quite well (.407) but apparently doesn’t have enough at bats (?) to qualify. Still a hitter to be respected.
LTU - Patrick Thomas, a redshirt senior, has played his whole career at LaTech. Seems to have blossomed. Alex Williams is a freshman and is listed at 6’4” and 230 pounds. Who wouldn’t want him playing first base? The bulldogs were hoping for this type of production from this highly regarded recruit.
UH - Vinnie Catricala is junior 3B I’ve mentioned before. He’s improving on a decent (.280) sophomore year and appears to be the hitter to pitch around on the team.
NEVADA - No one on the list as their .230 team BA suggests. This team needs to pick it up soon.
SJS - Best for last. Kyle Bellows is having a breakout year after having a somewhat down sophomore year which followed his freshman AA year. I’m pleased as I’m sure all Spartan fans are.
Pitching for my next post.
