Yesterday, the WAC went 2-1 in an abbreviated schedule. Fresno lost to Portland 4-2, Nevada beat Oregon 6-2, and Hawaii beat Loyola Marymount 6-5.
In the Hawaii game, Vinnie Catricala is quickly becoming a hitter to note as he went 4 for 4 to bring his average to a team-leading .417. The junior from Sacramento’s Jesuit has been on a tear lately. Jayson Kramer pitched 7 2/3 effective innings before, I think, tiring. He struck out 6 and walked no one in getting the win.
Nevada scored two in the eighth inning to win this one. Starter Stephen Bautista had an ineffective outing and continues to struggle with an ERA nearing 9.00. I’m sure they’re hoping he will right his ship by WAC time. Reliever Tinlin (3.86) pitched the last 3 1/3 for the win as he shut the door on Oregon.
Fresno lost this one as starter Sean Bonesteele had a rough 2 1/3 innings giving Portland all their runs; 4 earned runs, 5 hits and 3 walks. That’s a lot of baserunners. The junior pitcher is not doing well at all at 0-3 and 15.00 but only 9 IP. Spartan fans are heart-broken, I’m sure.
