Cal Poly (9-3) 3 - SJS (9-2) 2
As others have said in their postings, it looks like a lack of clutch hitting. I’ll pick on some players here. Karson Klauer went 0-4 and left 5 on base. He was at 2B and has done some DHing. Josh Silver went 3-5 as the DH and also had a run scored. Impressed here because he’s a freshman and hasn’t seen a lot of time. I Also noticed that Peterson started but went only one inning. I think Piraro went smart here and was thinking long haul; Tuesday game and he didn’t want to wear down his pitchers before the weekend in a game (and I need to stress this) that really had no impact on the WAC season. No pitcher went more than 2 innings. Concerns? Well, Vander Tuig continues to struggle and gave up 2 runs in his brief one inning stint. Vega finished up but gave up the winning run in the top of the ninth. Close game between two good teams with 670 watching.
Fresno (8-4) 7 - Buffalo (6-6) 5
Playing Buffalo for the third time in a tournament (Pepsi Johnny Quik ? WTF?) in their home park. Close game with a lot of hitting. Fresno used their ace, Holden Sprague to finish this one out before 2000 fans. Tom Mendonca hit his 5th HR and Danny Muno continues his torrid hitting along with Alan Ahmady; each with three hits. Look at these season stats: Ahmady .478, Muno .444, with Mendonca at .277 but with 5 homeruns. Only area of concern for the mutts is Detwiler at .238. Yes, folks, they’re hitting. Pitching? The pitchers with any significant innings are Floethe (0.95), Sprague (1.61), and Garrison (2.19). Their much-heralded freshman, Josh Poytress, has an ERA of 0.00 but has only 7.2 innings but obviously knows what the game is about. Sprague is a senior, Floethe is sophomore, and Garrison is a freshman. I don’t know how the freshmen will hold up during the WAC season (let’s hope they’re worn out when they come to town) but things are looking very good for Fresno. Poop.
Sac State (4-7) 8 - Pacific (3-8) 4
That sweep in Stockton is beginning to look not so hot. Sac State took this one in Sacramento in front of 118 (you read that right) fans. Must have been snowing. Fourteen hits spread throughout the lineup produced the 8 runs and the win for the Hornets. So how has the season been going so far? Well, they’ve won two in a row. Tim Wheeler is leading the team in hitting (as expected) at .439 along with the 3 homeruns he got in one game. The pitching has not been too good, also as expected. Team ERA is 6.31 and is led by Jeff Roth at 1.00 (but only 9.0 IP), Brandon Sandoval at 2.35, and Tommy Elrod at 5.84. It gets much worse after these three. Pitching was suspect coming in and they will have to improve if they want out of the cellar this year. Elrod is a junior, Sandoval a sophomore, and Roth a senior for some perspective. With the few innings, Roth appears to be the closer and looks to be a good one. However, will the starters allow him to do his job? We’ll see.
Stephen F. Austin at LaTech ppd due to weather. Down there weather means something that could be made into a movie.
