Nevada 3 - Washington 2
A two-run HR by Tyson Jaquez was the telling blow and strong starting pitching by Brock Stassi was all the difference in the Pack’s win over UW. Washington (5-6) outhit Nevada (3-7) 11 to 8 but seemed to never get the big hit at the right time.
Hawaii 10 - Mississippi State 5
As Chris Russo might say “One inning, just one G-- D--- inning!” Well, Hawaii got that inning. A 10 run fifth inning which was enough to take home a win. Cleanup hitter Kevin Macdonald’s bases loaded triple was the highlight of the nightmare inning (if you’re from Mississippi that is). At the end of four it was a scoreless game and at the end of five it was 10-4. Night into day I’d say. 2400 people watched Hawaii (5-6) take care of Mississippi State (8-3) in this one. An important note is that Hawaii’s top pitcher, Jared Alexander, started the game and went 4 strong innings striking out 5 and walking no one. WAC take note.
Fresno 6 - Buffalo 3
Steve Detwiler and Tom Mendonca (I’m sure everyone knows these names) hit back-to-back HRs to drive in three runs in the bottom of the eighth for the winning margin. Starting pitcher Holden Sprague had a complete game and now has a season ERA of 1.71. So far, he’s the man.
LaTech 5 - Eastern Michigan 4
The Bulldogs won this one on the strength of three HRs and then holding on as EM made a late inning push. Tech got only five hits but the three dingers were all that were needed. Jeb Stefan (2-0) got the win by pitching seven strong innings; 7 SO and 0 BB. I’ll say it every time; no walks equals a win.
NMSU 12/6 - Hartford 2/3
The Aggies won the first game 12-2 by jumping all over the Bulls’ starting pitcher and his immediate backup. Ben Sobocinski gave up seven (6 earned) runs in two innings of work and showed he needs more work. In the second game the Aggies (now 10-1) got effective starting pitching from Noah Garza, just enough hitting, and a big five run third inning to put this one away 6-3. Now, is this 10-1 start real? Last year the Aggies led the world in making errors and I think they’ve really improved in that area. Pitching and fielding will win most games along with the occasional 3 run HR.
St. Mary’s 7/10 - Sac State 6/2
Sac State’s woeful ways (1-7) continue in dropping a DH to St. Mary’s at Moraga. They outhit the Gaels (what’s a Gael?) 12 to 11 but two big innings did them in in game two. In the first game the Hornets were leading 6-4 going into the bottom of the ninth but closer Eric Fregosi couldn’t get anyone out in losing the game by giving up three runs on five hits with no walks. He actually got two batters out but I’m sure he feels he didn’t get anyone out. Those are tough games to lose.
SJSU 9 - Pacific 3
The boys in blue improved to 8-0 with this win at Pacific. What pleases me most is that the two wins were by two lefties with control (Berner and Peterson). Peterson’s line was highlighted by 8 IP with 7 SO and a single walks. No walks, no walks, no walks; c’mon, don’t you get it? Only nine hits by the Spartans and no HRs. BUT, Kyle Bellows led the way with a big 3 for 4, two runs scored, and an rbi. Welcome back, dude.
