LaTech 10 - Eastern Michigan 7
When you fall behind 8-0, it’s usually pretty hard to come back and win but EM (3-7) made a game of it against LaTech (5-3). EM stuck with their starter through 5 innings and 9 runs in an ineffective start but their relievers gained some control to keep the game close. LaTech’s pitching faired only a little better with the relievers giving up runs and the starter John Anderson doing quite well for 5 innings. Lots of hitting. Not convinced LaTech’s pitching can hold up to the WAC schedule. 902 fans enjoyed a beautiful day in Ruston.
NMSU 5 - Hartford 4
246 fans watched NMSU (8-1) hand Hartford (0-1) its first loss of the season in a well-played game (now that's a pretty deceiving statement). Pretty even game all around played in Las Cruces. Hartford, 0-1; what can I say? I know nuttin’. NMSU continues to win and hit homeruns. They did that last year also. They seem improved to me but how much???
Hawaii 7 - Mississippi State 4
2500 fans watched Hawaii (4-6) win in impressive fashion against a very good Mississippi State (8-2) team. Pitching was outstanding as Nate Klein went 7 strong innings giving up only 3 earned runs as Hawaii scored 3 in the bottom of the ninth to pull off the mild upset. Yep, 3 run walkoff HR by thirdbaseman Vinnie Catricala (nice Hawaiian name). Place must have been jumpin’ after that.
Washington 11 - Nevada 2
Washington (5-5) hammered Nevada (2-7) as the Pack continues to struggle. Only 4 hits and the pitching was ineffective as 5 of 6 pitchers didn’t get the job done. The exception was Jacob Anderson who faced two and struck them out. Highlight? Doug Cherry (UW) was the topping of the sundae (get it? heh, heh) as he hit a grand slam in the 9th to seal the deal. 628 in 43 degree weather in Reno suffered through this mess. Will warmer weather turn Nevada’s fortunes around?
SJSU 5 - Pacific 4
Not much to say that hasn’t already been said in a previous thread. I’ve kept quiet about Vega until now but he looks like the real deal as a closer for our boys in blue. I’ve got to see him deal. Berner improves to 3-0 and Vega gets his fourth save (!). Oh, here’s a big deal. I was a bit concerned about Kyle Bellows’s absence but he appears to be back; 3-4 and 2 runs scored. 531 fans. How many in blue and gold?
