Around the WAC in baseball
SJSU – A four game sweep of St. Joseph’s of Philadelphia is pretty much the same kind of start as last year when the Spartans swept by Utah to start the season. Seems to me that hopes are higher this year. Hope this trend continues.
NMSU – 3-0 with a sweep of North Dakota (boy, where do THEY practice this time of year?) highlighted by a 3 HR game by junior outfielder Leo Aguirre. Will they be a force to be reckoned with? Can anyone guess the mascot of North Dakota? The Fighting Sioux.
FSU – Fresno split two games with Washington to go 1-1 this year. Highlight must be the selling out of their stadium for (at least) game one. I would have been surprised if they hadn’t.
LaTech – Started their season by winning the first two games with Grambling State. The second game was 20-1 so hitting and pitching did their parts. Pitching was a weakness last year so we’ll see.
SacState – Playing in Tucson, Arizona and Sac State split the first two games of their three game series. I don’t know about you, but I’m impressed that Sac State is holding their own against a perennial power of Pac10 baseball. I don’t know what they (UA) have this year but any win against the Pac10, in any sport, is good for the WAC. Way to go Hornets!
Nevada – The most interesting opening series is the Pack’s in Phoenix at the Something or ‘Nother Tournament. They split with Gonzaga losing 14-2 (with 7 errors which needs to be said) and winning 7-4. The other game was a shellacking by Missouri (damn good team) 12-1. Great! They get to play them again today. Pitching looks suspect and hitting ditto. Here’s a good one; did you know the Pack have a player by the name of Aaron Henry? Parents have a sense of humor as well as baseball history. I wonder if everyone calls him the hammer?
Hawaii- Playing a tough and highly-rated UC Irvine team the Rainbows have started out the year 0-3 by losing 5-4, 5-4, and 5-1 against the Anteaters (everyone familiar how they got that mascot?). Impressive to me was how they remained close in all games without using their ace (as far as I could see) Jared Alexander. Could be hurt. In any event don’t get too worked up about this 0-3 start; the Anteaters are very good; more highly rated than Fresno if that means anything.
Boise – Oops. Don’t have a baseball team. And they want to become a player in national sports with no baseball team? Maine has a baseball team. North Dakota has a baseball team. I talked to a BSU fan after the BSU basketball game a few weeks ago (nice guy whose son played that night) and he said there is plenty of good baseball played in the area. I’ll leave it at that.
Overall the WAC did well with the exception being Hawaii at 0-3 but they should turn that around soon. SJS? Looks good but untested really. NMSU? Ditto. FSU? Good opponent but pitching still a question. LaTech? Improved. SacState? The pleasant surprise of the weekend. Nevada? Hard to say. Hawaii? See comments above.
