OK, ok, so they seem to have pitching. They win game one 1-0 but don’t get too worked up. Oh, oops, I’m talking the Giants and Timmy here but this might be what we will be dealing with both the Giants and the Spartans this year. Dave Berner pitched a complete game with 10 K’s and 0 BB and pitched just two over the minimum for his nine inning game. He was simply dominant. So much so, in fact, that the Spartans positioned the left fielder in extreme left center figuring no rightie would pull Berner and a leftie would be a bit tardy and hit it that way. Sam was right. His fast ball was pretty good and the hits they got (three) were off his fast ball. His slider (I think) was unhittable and it looks like he threw a change a few times in the dirt (perfect placement).
The Hawks starter, Prescott, had a pretty good game also. Kept the second inning damage to one run which was very good but that was all the Spartans needed to win.
There were no hitting highlights since there were only a total of seven hits for the game. However, Stienstra hit a shot to center for a double and Bellows just missed one for a deep out. Valine hit a double down the left field line that just missed going out and Klauer doubled down the left field line to get the only rbi. One other hit and that’s it.
Now a word for the worthy opponent. I left in the top of the ninth and talked to a few players from the Hawks. I asked them what they thought of the weather and how were things back in Philly. They were loving it here and (get this) this was the first time they had been on a field. In an earlier post I mentioned how difficult it is to compete with western and southern teams in college baseball. They’ve been practicing inside. For those of you who were there today I think they deserve a round of applause for doing as well as they did. I was impressed.
