I don't agree with this post, but it is fair comment. The poster relies on football fact and stats, and it seems clear he is interested in the success of Spartan football. So I can't get too bent out of shape about it. He's entitled to his opinion, he's expressed it. Fair enough. There is an interesting comment to the post, though, which is along the lines of something I was thinking. Malley is used to running an offense in a 50-yard box. What would happen if he tried to run the same 50-yard box offense against the 100-yard box defense of USC? Could we catch them off-balance, out of position, or set our own tempo? Would it give us more yards-after-a-catch, or perhaps slow down their pass rush? And if, at halftime, the USC coaches adjusted their defense to defend a 50-yard box, and we were then to switch to running plays based on a 100-yard box, what would happen then? Veeerrrrry interesting. Veeeeeerrrry interesting indeed. What do you all think?

: He is projecting that Malley will continue the
: pass happy arena-type football. I don't
: think so.
: I think he(Malley wants balance) and he'll
: call
: plays to get the edge on the def. whether it
: is
: a run or pass.We shall see.Remember he
: played
: at Santa Clara and later coached there
: success-
: fully.

: "New Spartan quarterback coach a
: mistake
: Last year, the Spartans’ offense struggled
: from a lack of balance. SJSU could not run
: the ball, ranking 115th in rushing offense.
: It seemed like the Spartan offense stopped
: trying to run the ball toward the end of the
: season, making offense worse.
: Since Marcus Arroyo started calling plays in
: 2007, the run game has disappeared. Now that
: Arroyo is gone, I was hoping the Spartans
: would go back to the balanced offense that
: was in place during the 2006 season that led
: us to a New Mexico Bowl victory.
:
:
: In 2006, the Spartans ran the ball 490 times
: and the team averaged 356.8 yards of total
: offense per game. Last year, the Spartans
: ran the ball 386 times and averaged 282.2
: yards of total offense per game.
: I was happy when Arroyo left to coach at
: Wyoming because the offense was so bad under
: his guidance.
:
: When four-star running back Lamon Muldrow
: signed with the Spartans, it was a step in
: the right direction, because it was the
: first step in rebuilding the run game.
:
: Now, I hear that the Spartans have hired
: Terry Malley, the former offensive
: coordinator for the San Jose Sabercats, as
: Arroyo’s replacement.
:
: Malley comes from the pass-heavy Arena
: Football League, and I don’t think he will
: emphasize the running game as much as is
: needed.
:
: I see Malley as a move to keep the same
: style of offense that did not work last
: year, and it will not work this year.
: There are teams, like last year’s Texas
: Tech and the 2007 Hawaii squad, that have
: had success abandoning the run game. But in
: big games, they got killed.
:
: I think hiring Malley is a bad move. Last
: year, the Spartans were ranked 112th in the
: nation in total offense, and I don’t think
: it will be much better this year.
:
: If the Spartans’ offense is going to
: improve, they will have to run the ball.
: Until that happens, they will not make it to
: another bowl game."
