One thing I'll say about Tomey is that his top dog's are those that prove it on the field on game day and in practice. There are no sacred cows and the fight for each and every position goes on every week. I think it makes for excellent competition and all but eliminates individualism. That said I think KJ sans his illness will have re-gained his strength and be back to the form he had from a year ago. These WR positions should give the Spartans enough depth to even grow on the defensive side of the ball and on special teams where players may turn to for time on the field. I think the RB position will also show the same depth and lend to the LB and safety corps. One thing I know about Tomey is he likes guys who are willing to be versatile and willing to do whatever they need to to contribute to the team's success.

: I believe the discussion was only the
: recruits. KJ will still be top dog unless
: knocked off.

: Isn't someone going to have to beat out
: Kevin
: Jurovich for a spot at WR? And wasn't
: Kevin recruited out of Valley Christian HS
: as a Cornerback? You really won't know
: until Fall.

: I agree with Rick. That's what JC players
: should do. They come in as juniors (usually)
: so they need to be ready to go, now. Looks
: like our RB situation is in good hands.
: Finally, a strong RB with some speed; not
: exactly a burner but can break away. Muldrow
: at HB, so good there. Jones, Richmond, and
: now Avery. I'm not much for watching film of
: a kid when he was 12 or whatever but,
: watching him run away from what appear to be
: midget DBs was pretty impressive. The
: matchups looked unfair. I'm thinking Owens
: as a young receiver with the 49ers before he
: had an attitude transplant. Driver? I don't
: know much about him other than it sure
: sounds good. I'm glad (proud?) that the
: Spartans kept after him after others dropped
: interest when he blew out his knee. How
: serious was it? I see him being more like
: Francies than Owens but either would be
: fine. A very good get. Now, think of the
: last two years and field goal kicking. Not
: good memories right? I think the kid from
: Sunnyvale could be the guy from day one for
: the next four years. Other newcomers are
: pretty young so I still see them coming in
: only on certain downs and situations rather
: than starting. Orth (sp?) intrigues me.
: Small school dominator so he has a lot to
: prove but I love possession receivers.
:
: Don't overlook Avelino Valencia. Isn't he a
: JC transfer who is a preferred walk-on? He
: may be able to help out right away at tight
: end. I'd rather Driver take the time to
: ensure his knee is completely sound before
: stepping into the backfield. We may be a
: little weaker in that area next year as
: opposed to last, but I don't want any player
: to jeopardize their future by coming back
: from an injury too soon.
:
: Next season is looking more and more like it
: will come down to a measure of how much the
: offense, especially the line, improves. We
: just need to be able to move the ball and
: pick up some first downs, and we'll be okay.
