One of UCLA's most famous coaches was a traditional walk-on.
Bruins coach Billy Barnes had a reputation of welcoming walk-ons. After San Jose State coaches told a freshman JV player that he wasn't big enough for varsity football, the kid from North Hollywood sat out a year at LA Valley College, boxed Golden Gloves and won his only fight, then the following year walked-on in Westwood.
His name? Terry Donahue. The San Jose State ATO started for the Bruins and was on the team that upset undefeated Michigan State in the Rose Bowl.
