I went to the signing event last night. The backroom of the Huakilau was maybe just a bit small for that size crowd, but it has a nice atmosphere. Someone said their steak dinner ($15) that they ate afterward, was excellent. Look for the Huakilau to host an outdoor bash the week of the Hawaii game.
A few things of note:
Tomey said that his staff landed all but one of the 4 or 5 highly targeted recruits they went after. He didn't mention names, but I'm guessing Carta-Samuels was the one they didn't land, with Travis Johnson, Brandon Driver, Harrison Waid, and Chris Hill being the ones they did. Overall, an excellent job by the staff.
Lamom Muldrow (aka MoJo): Tomey said that they are looking for MoJo to be a grinder, rather than the type of back that tears off 40 yard runs. He looks very strong on film.
Pierce Burton: He's a different kind of lineman for us. No fat on him at all.
Brandon Driver: Assuming he recovers completely from his injury, he will continue the nice (recent) tradition of great Spartan cornerbacks. Very good punt returner too. Tomey said he may be able to play this year, but if not, he still as 3 years to play 2.
Chris Hill: Has been coached by the same person that coached Christopher Owens. IMHO, he is ready to come in and compete right away for a starting position.
James Orth: Will in all likelihood start his Spartan career as a safety, rather than WR.
Abasi Salimu: Greyshirted this past fall and gained 50 pounds (from 200 to 250).
Ryan Jones: Will likely redshirt this coming season.
Dasmen Stewart: Just turned 17 last November. Very athletic. With four other QB's on the roster, it makes sense to redshirt him (my opinion).
Travis Johnson: Very impressive player. Could turn out to be the top player in this year's crop.
Marquis Avery: Tomey said he may be better than James Jones.
Tomey said we are very close to being out of the woods regarding APR penalties. The last semester and a half have been the best academically for the football team in the past 20 years. He expects us to have the maximum 25 scholarships to award next year.
The new turf at Spartan stadium is not installed yet. Still dirt. But, the project is on schedule, and we should have it in place by the Spring game. Also look for SJSU to host high school football games once again.
Jurovich will be back next year. As will several other Spartans that missed most or all of the 2008 season (Ryno Gonzalas, Cameron Island, Jalal Beauchmann, Fred Koloto, Justin Willis, and Patrick Perry.
The offensive assistant coach will be announced in the next 10 days. He will be calling the plays. I will be shocked if it's not Terry Malley.
The video presentation of the recruits was excellent.
Also in attendance were assistants Steve Morton, Charles Nash, Kinji Green, Brent Brennan, Kent Baer, and Ken Margerum, as well as AD Tom Bowen and members of his staff.
