Speaking of expenses, I never could understand why La. Tech is in our conference. Has anyone calculated what the cost of playing there is?

: Bowl games mean extra dough for Wolf Pack

:
: With the economy in the shape it’s in,
: Nevada and other schools in the Western
: Athletic Conference might begin depending on
: their BCS checks.
:
: For the second straight year, Nevada’s
: coffers will be filled with about $600,000
: more than was budgeted, thanks to the
: Pack’s 2007 bowl berth (its third
: straight) and a WAC team’s participation
: in a Bowl Championship Series bowl game.
:
: That might seem like a lot of money, but
: John Nunn, Nevada’s associate athletic
: director for business, said it will go
: quickly.
:
: “You’d like to think it’s gravy, but
: by the time you do budgets ...,” he said.
: “Our total travel costs, for example, are
: probably well over $2 million a year. You
: figure a 10 percent increase in airline
: costs, that’s another $200,000 right
: there.”
:
: All monies received from bowl-game
: participation goes into the athletic
: department’s general fund, Nunn said.
:
: “It helps us meet operating obligations
: throughout the year,” Nunn said.
:
: The Wolf Pack received $400,000 for its
: participation in the New Mexico Bowl, a 23-0
: loss to New Mexico on Dec. 22. After
: expenses, Nunn said, the total came to about
: $200,000. The New Mexico Bowl payout of
: $750,000 goes to the conference, which must
: first pay for costs before it distributes
: what’s left.
:
: Nevada also gets about $410,000 because of
: Hawaii’s participation in the Sugar Bowl,
: a 41-10 loss to Georgia on New Year’s Day.
: It marked the second straight year that a
: WAC school has reached a BCS game. Boise
: State defeated Oklahoma in the Fiesta Bowl
: following the 2006 season.
:
: In each case, the WAC team that played in
: the BCS game (total payout between $14
: million and $17 million) received 70 percent
: of the WAC’s share, about $4.3 million
: after expenses. The other eight WAC teams
: and the conference office split evenly the
: other 30 percent, which came to $410,555.
:
: The checks are expected to arrive in June.
:
: “All I’ve seen so far is a
: spreadsheet,” Nunn said.
