Big Plays On Both Sides At 2nd Football Scrimmage

"We have a lot of work left, but we’re making progress." - Dick Tomey
Two long touchdown plays by the offense and a 60-yard interception return for a touchdown by defensive end Carl Ihenacho were three of the big plays in the second San Jose State University spring football scrimmage.
Quarterback Sean Flynn and wide receiver Josh Harrison teamed up on a 37-yard catch-and-run for a touchdown to open the scoring in the scrimmage held in Spartan Stadium. Harrison led all receivers with five receptions for 63 yards.
Walk-on wide receiver Jordan Johnson took an option pitch from quarterback Myles Eden and raced 80-yards for a touchdown in the scrimmage’s longest play.
Ihenacho, who had the only quarterback sack in the scrimmage, concluded the day’s activities with a 60-yard return by deflecting Flynn’s pass to himself.
“We had some big plays both ways. So, there was some give-and-take. The last time we were in here (March 16), the defense dominated which is understandable for that time of year. We made a few more plays on offense today. We made big plays on defense like the last play. And, we’re getting better,” said San Jose State head coach Dick Tomey.
“Obviously, we have a long way to go. This was our ninth practice and we have six left. We have to maximize those six practices, because they are precious to us. We have a lot of work left, but we’re making progress.
“We’re always looking for players. Somebody who does a great job can make a place for himself.
“I liked what I saw from Josh Harrison (returning redshirt). I liked what I saw from Jordan Johnson. Myles Eden continues to make plays and not make mistakes, which is encouraging. I see (tackle) Steve Lightsy doing some good things in the offensive line. I see a bunch of guys on defense running around making plays.
“We’re having too many tipped balls against our offense. That’s a credit to the defense and something we have to fix on offense. We’re losing too many plays where it’s a ball our quarterbacks are not getting to throw (down field) or complete.
“Coye Francies was a heck of returner at Oregon State. (As a return specialist) He looks like he has ‘live legs’ and is athletic. I think Jared (Strubeck) had a real good day. Right now, Jared would be our punter.”
The Spartans resume spring practice, Sunday, April 6, at 2:00 p.m. on the practice field.
The annual Spring Game is Saturday, April 12, in Spartan Stadium. Festivities begin at noon with the game starting at 2:00 p.m. There is no admission charge and free parking is available in Lot 1 across the street from the stadium.
