I remember when the two QBs in question decided on which school they would attend. Bother were much recruited and most SJS fans figured John would go to State and interest would lag with Clarkson. As it turned out, I think John thought it might be better to not play for his dad and Steve came to SJS. A lot of people were upset but Steve turned out more than OK. I'm with many of you that I wish he would send a QB or two State's way.

: I passed this info on to Eric Sondheimer re
: Clarkson's Air7 quarterback camp. (Is it now
: DeBartolo?)
:
: Steve Clarkson (#7) played for San Jose
: State for four seasons: 1979-80-81-82, all
: under the late Jack Elway. Jack's son John
: and one of his sisters wanted him to play
: under their dad, but John's mother thought
: he'd be better off a Stanford.
:
: The Jack Elway-Steve Clarkson seasons at SJS
: went like this:
:
: 1979: 6-4-1 Lost to Stanford 29-45 (SJS QB
: Ed Luther)
: 1980: 7-4-0 Lost to Stanford 21-35
: 1981: 9-3-0 Beat Stanford 28-06 (SJS QB
: Steve Clarkson, Stanford QB John Elway)
: 1982: 8-3-0 Beat Stanford 35-31 (SJS QB
: Steve Clarkson, Stanford QB John Elway)
:
: John Elway himself said he'd wished he'd
: gone to San Jose State to play for his dad.
: Would he have beaten out Steve Clarkson?
:
: (Does anyone know who the starting QB was
: for Elway in 1980? Did Clarkson start as a
: soph that year?)
