What were SJSU's numbers and did we get any of the reductions waived because the team is doing better over the last 3 seasons or that Tomey recruited less players the last two classes. How does SDSU know their APR if they are not released until May? Does SJS know theirs and if so why are they not releasing it unless it is not good again.

: Lower penalty still costs SDSU 6 scholarships
: Brent Schrotenboer
: San Diego Union-Tribune
: March 27, 2008
:
: San Diego State's football program will
: suffer a reduction of six scholarships over
: the next two seasons because of a fourth
: straight year of poor Academic Progress
: Rates.
:
: But the news could have been a lot worse for
: SDSU this year: The Aztecs' original penalty
: was the maximum of nine scholarships, a
: sanction that was reduced thanks to an
: appeal to the NCAA.
:
: This year's penalty means SDSU probably will
: enter the fall semester from four to six
: under the NCAA overall football scholarship
: maximum of 85. If the Aztecs don't take the
: full hit of six this year, the rest will be
: taken next year, head coach Chuck Long said.
:
: Meanwhile, SDSU's third-year coach hopes
: that recently introduced academic support
: measures will finally stop the bleeding.
:
: “That plan is starting to take hold,” Long
: said as spring practice began for his team
: this week. “We just had to take some hits
: from the past.”
:
: The APR was introduced by the NCAA in 2005
: and measures the retention and eligibility
: of student-athletes. It is now a rolling
: four-year rate, so in this case, SDSU's APR
: dates to the 2003-04 academic year through
: 2006-07, Long's first season.
:
: Each year of the APR, SDSU football has
: underperformed.
:
: In 2005, which included data only from
: 2003-04, SDSU had the third-lowest APR of
: Division I-A teams (848). Luckily for SDSU,
: the NCAA didn't mete out penalties that
: year.
:
: In 2006, the NCAA hit SDSU with a
: five-scholarship penalty, which was reduced
: to four on appeal.
:
: Last year, NCAA penalized SDSU with three
: scholarship losses, but the Aztecs had that
: penalty waived under the condition that SDSU
: reach a single-year APR of 925 for the
: 2006-07 academic year.
:
: That condition was not met. Football's
: rolling rate is now about 889, Athletic
: Director Jeff Schemmel said. SDSU appealed
: to the NCAA on the basis that Long signed 22
: recruits last year instead of the maximum
: 25. That's because he had expected to take
: last year's penalty before it was waived.
: Otherwise, SDSU would have had to suffer an
: additional three scholarship losses this
: year and next.
:
: “As we get deeper into APR, the multiyear
: rate takes over, and it's harder to move
: up,” Schemmel said. “If you were bad in the
: first year and good in the second year, it
: made a big jump. But now we've got three and
: four years of numbers. Even when you've had
: good years, it's hard to crawl out of the
: hole we've been in. It does take longer than
: we had hoped.”
:
: SDSU hired a full-time learning specialist
: to help athletes, plus other academic
: support. Ten SDSU football players graduated
: at midterm in December, the most midterm
: grads in several years.
:
: But those positives couldn't outpace the
: past negatives. SDSU suffered enormous
: attrition from its 2003 and 2004 recruiting
: classes under former head coach Tom Craft.
: Of the 52 newcomers brought in those two
: years, six failed to qualify for admission
: and 14 others were dismissed, transferred or
: quit.
:
: Such attrition damages the team's APR
: because each enrolled player is assigned two
: points per semester: one for staying with
: the school, another for staying academically
: eligible. An athlete who flunks out would
: count as 0-for-2. An athlete in good
: academic standing is a 1-for-2 if he leaves
: school early.
:
: A team's APR is computed by dividing its
: points earned by its total possible points,
: on a 1,000-point scale.
:
: A team is penalized a scholarship only when
: it has an APR below 925 and loses a
: student-athlete who would not have been
: academically eligible had he or she returned
: to the school (an 0-for-2 athlete).
: Penalized teams cannot re-award that
: scholarship to another player for one year.
:
: So while SDSU's current APR score still is
: rooted in the Craft years, Long's program
: still will suffer if players leave early
: under his watch. Offensive linemen Whitley
: Fehoko and Eric Rouser are among those who
: have departed early under Long for various
: reasons.
:
: “As a new coach you should be able to start
: over,” Long said. “To me, that's not a fair
: deal.”
:
: If the situation doesn't improve and its APR
: is under 900, SDSU also could be facing
: additional “historical” penalties down the
: road, including a reduction in practice and
: recruiting time.
:
: The NCAA will release APR data for all
: schools in May. Long had already planned to
: endure at least part of the penalty in
: February when he signed 21 recruits, four
: under the maximum. SDSU could absorb
: additional reductions this fall by not
: awarding scholarships to some deserving
: multiyear walk-ons.
:
: With more selective recruiting, Long said,
: he hopes to reduce attrition.
