I watched Danny play every game as a Spartan. I graduated in 1967 with my MBA and went to Pittsburgh. Danny was drafted by the Steelers, and in those days the whole team practiced after the draft. The Steelers did not know what they had in the players they drafted because the draft was not as sophisticated as today.
Danny came in to the Steeler practices and was sensational. They practiced for a week and he was their most impressive player. The newpapers were annointing him as the best QB on the team.
He and I had dinner the night after the last scrimmage and he was very excited, but was missing the Monterey area. The Steelers made him a big offer for that time and he couldn't make a decision. He went home and gave me a call and said he wasn't going to leave Monterey.
A few years later, Pittsburgh started their reign as Super Bowl champions. What could have been if Danny had come back to Pittsburgh?

: Danny died of a heart attack about 6 to 7
: years ago. He was in his early 50's. When I
: first moved to Monterey, I used to see Danny
: tending bar at at place in downtown Monterey
: on Tyler St. called "Fanny's" - He
: tended bar there for years. Cass Jackson
: coached at MPC at that time and used to come
: in every night. I was a regular there for
: MNF. They had a small kitchen and the cook
: used to turn out a great
: "all-you-can-eat" spaghetti feed
: for the Monday nite games. There were some
: great times there and funny stories too.
: Danny was a fun guy and was great to be
: around. Very gregarious. I miss him.
