I have such a low opinion of Fitz Hill that I would not want to start to put it in writing as I might be arrested. However, in fairness, I believe you will find that academic achievement actually improved over Baldwin and Elway and Gilbert. In that whole period, until the NCAA got tough on academics and instituted this APR system, San Jose State had a consistently dismal record of graduating football players. Our JC guys (for the most part) did not graduate (Steve DeBerg did finally get his degree at age 40). Ralston did pay some attention to academics (and recruited more high school grads) but he was the exception. As much as I'd like to blame it all on FitzChuck, we actually started to improve (slightly) during that period.
