Tryout hopefuls chase dreams

STOCKTON - Domingo Holmes likes the idea of playing football again in Stockton.
"It'd feel like high school," Holmes said. "I like playing in front of the hometown fans. I played in some big college stadiums, but I wish they were closer to home."
Holmes, a 2002 Franklin High graduate who played defensive back at San Jose State in 2006, was one of about 60 players who attended the Stockton Lightning's final open tryout camp Saturday at St. Mary's High's Sanguinetti Field.
"Domingo Holmes is strong, quick, he plays hard, and he's a smart player," Lightning coach Doug Murray said...
...The Lightning held two previous open tryouts, and they have 21 signed players on its roster.
Murray said individuals will be allowed to try out by invitation, and the team can bring up to 35 players to training camp. The roster must be down to 22 when the Lightning open its third season on March 28 at Tri-Cities.
The players bench-pressed reps of 225 pounds, ran the 40-meter dash and competed in position-specific drills.
Murray said he and his staff will evaluate the workouts and do additional research on prospects. He puts more stock into the football-related drills.
The Lightning have already made a contract offer to wide receiver/defensive back Rufus Skillern, a former Arena Football League player who participated in Saturday's event.
"It's a matter of whether he wants to come or not," Murray said...
