The big day arrives

Four Roseville area athletes signed national letters of intent on Wednesday, a group that included Granite Bay football player Peyton Thompson (San Jose State)...
Earning a college scholarship through sports is a long-held dream come true for many athletes, a time for celebration and reflection, and a chance to wonder what competition will be like at the next level.
For Thompson, the Granite Bay fly back who was named the Press-Tribune's Roseville-Area Offensive Player of the Year while helping lead his Grizzlies to a Sac-Joaquin Div. II Section title, receiving a scholarship meant that the long hours of hard work had paid off.
"For me it means that everything is finally finished and complete," Thompson said. "Everything that I've worked for has happened. It's like getting a good grade back on a test."
Thompson is excited and already looking ahead to perhaps being utilized at San Jose State in much the same manner that he was used by coach Ernie Cooper at Granite Bay.
"They don't want me to red-shirt next season," Thompson said. "I assume that I'll be seeing some playing time and if I happen to start, I would be the youngest Spartan ever to start a football game."
Cooper is thrilled to see a player like Thompson rewarded for being a team-first kind of athlete.
Everybody dreams of this happening, but it's very hard to achieve," Cooper said. "He's our 22nd football player to be given a full ride in nine years, so he's part of a very select group. I'm so proud of Peyton because he gave up some of his individual stats for the sake of the team and that's one of the reasons we won the whole thing."
