Ryan Otten
TE
6-5 / 205
Del Ore High School / Loomis, CA
ESPN Evaluation:
“Evaluation: Otten is a good-looking prospect who offers great potential with his size and athletic ability. He is a bit of a tweener on defense-- lacking the bulk and strength to move down to defensive end and the ideal fluidity to continue at outside linebacker. We feel his best upside may be on offense as a big tight end target. Flashes deceptive athleticism at the position. Currently runs sharp routes and shows good savvy adjusting patterns to the soft spots in zone coverage. Utilizes his size well creating mismatches on smaller defenders. Effectively shields defenders and is tough to beat for a jump ball with his long wingspan and leaping ability. Hands are reliable with most grabs coming away from his body; does a nice job adjusting to the difficult throw. Demonstrates the strength to absorb the big hit and continue with his forward progress. However, he offers little speed or elusiveness with the ball in his hands. We project he will be utilized more as a possession tight end at the next level; moving the chains on intermediate-to-deep grabs. Blocking ability is currently adequate. He can effectively work angle blocks and athletically chip his way up to the next level. However, we have concerns about his ability as an in-line blocker at the Division 1 level. Currently struggles creating separation on drive blocks. Lacks the power needed to explode underneath defenders and knock them upright. Needs added bulk and strength for angle blocks as well. Flashes difficulty controlling the lock out and sealing off the edge on perimeter runs. Improved leverage can help mask his physical disadvantage in the trenches. We would like to see him become more of a threat after the catch. Speed and elusiveness are currently adequate and project marginally at the next level. Added bulk should allow him to dip the shoulder more effectively and drag smaller defenders for the extra yards. Will need the size for durability when plucking the ball over the middle as well. Otten flashes enough skill and natural ability to mold into a player if his body continues to physically develop.”
