Tanner Burns
S
6-0 / 170
Valley Christian High School / San Jose, CA
ESPN Evaluation:
“Burns effectively utilizes his tall frame supporting the run and pass at safety. He will need to add major bulk to play at the Division 1 level, but he possesses a rangy body that should quickly add good size once he attacks a college weight-training program. Plays with feisty aggressiveness as a run supporter. Transitions quickly from his pedal and flashes adequate short-area closing speed when attacking vertically. He does a nice job cleaning up on broken tackles and occasionally will deliver a solid pop on contact. Provides adequate lateral run support utilizing his good fluidity and athleticism to pursue the football to the sideline. Coverage range and skills are decent. Times up his break well and utilizes his long body to occasionally separate the ball from the receiver. Provides good match-up potential on tight ends with his blend of size and athletic ability. However, we have concerns about his range at the Division 1 level. We have yet to see the burst needed to break from his middle 1/3 over sideline routes. At times, he flashes difficulty keeping receivers in front of him and maintaining his cushion. As a run defender, his lack of size is often exposed at the high school level. He struggles getting over blockers in space and often creates large run creases with his rounded pursuit angles. Needs the added size and strength as a tackler as well. Inconsistent wrapping up bigger ball carriers and can be unreliable as the last defender. On occasion, he looks for the big hit not the secure tackle. Burns is a good-looking athlete whose physical development should dictate his college transition.”
