Looks like, among the three CSU schools, only Fresno is getting its football players to perform academically. It may be that they have a better academic support system (though it seems we have focused on that for several years now-- including the Gadway Adademic Center) or they are able to recruit athletes who score higher out of high school (they avoid JC recruits). In any case, its got to be embarassing for both us and the Aztecs. Both schools have always felt that we were on a higher academic plane than the Bulldogs.

: Aztecs face double hit on scholarships
: Brent Schrotenboer
: San Diego Union-Tribune
: January 24, 2008
:
: The San Diego State football team is facing
: more scholarship reductions because of a
: poor Academic Progress Rate, but the Aztecs
: still could end up with 20-25 recruits on
: Feb. 6, the start of the new signing period.
:
: Two years ago the NCAA docked SDSU football
: four scholarships because of a poor APR.
: Last year the NCAA penalized SDSU three more
: scholarships but granted the Aztecs a waiver
: on the condition they reach a 925 APR for
: 2006-07.
:
: Because the Aztecs are going to miss that
: mark, according to NCAA documents, they've
: faced a potential double hit this year –
: last year's waived penalty plus new ones.
:
: The overall penalty is “yet to be
: finalized,” according to SDSU athletics
: spokesman Mike May, who said SDSU officials
: did not want to talk about the situation
: until it was.
:
: SDSU has appealed at least part of its
: penalty and could be docked two to six
: scholarships. The NCAA maximum is 25 new
: recruits annually.
:
: The NCAA's final ruling may not come by Feb.
: 6. If SDSU ends up signing more players than
: it would be allowed under any forthcoming
: penalty, normal attrition or delayed
: enrollment (“gray-shirting”) could help SDSU
: meet its required numbers by the fall. SDSU
: has signed two junior college recruits for
: this year's class and has oral commitments
: from about 18 other prospects.
:
: “Our APR is going to be down from last year
: and below 925,” SDSU's Colleen Evans wrote
: in an e-mail to the NCAA last semester.
: “Will the penalties we would have incurred
: last year be applied to any penalties we
: might incur this year? Do we need to take
: all penalties in one year?”
:
: An NCAA official responded that if SDSU
: football was going to be under 925 this
: year, the team will become subject to last
: year's waived penalty and any new penalties
: this year.
:
: Coach Chuck Long had already planned to take
: the three-scholarship hit when the reprieve
: came and gave just 22 new scholarships last
: year.
:
: This year's appeal is complicated, however,
: because Long later gave scholarships to at
: least six walk-ons who had been in the
: program at least two years, bringing the
: roster to the 85-scholarship limit. If the
: Aztecs had held at 22 new recruits and 82
: overall scholarships, it would have been
: easier to argue they already took last
: year's penalty in full.
:
: The APR measures the retention and
: eligibility of athletes. When it was
: introduced in 2005, SDSU had the third-worst
: APR of 117 Division I-A teams.
