I wouldn't count on SJSU landing a JC running back this year. Only three names have surfaced, so it appears that a JC running back is not a priority. The three JC backs that I know of are as follows:
Erin Madden - Compton JC
Highly touted (4 stars), he had offers from SJSU, Arizona, Colorado, Oregon, Oregon St, and Kansas St. prior to the 2007 season. He ran into some legal problems over the summer and did not play this past fall. It appears everyone, including SJSU, has cooled their interest. I doubt he signs with a D1-A team.
Evan Williams - Santa Rose JC
At 6-1, 210, Williams had the size to be a workhorse, but that simply was not the case. In nine games for SRJC, he only carried the ball 61 times, which is slighly more than half of the number of carries his QB Greg Alexander had. He did catch 41 balls out of the backfield. But, based on productivity alone, it does not appear he would be an impact player for SJSU.
Zack Hulce - Glendale (AZ) JC
Hulce was much more productive than Evan Williams. He ran for 1100 yards in 10 games, 8 TD's, but only average one reception a game. I ran for 260 yards in one game this past season.
It's more likely that SJSU will sign a high school back. I'm keeping my fingers crossed that Langston Jackson of Simi Valley chooses the Spartans. He's cut in the Johnny Johnson mold.
Would not be surprised to see both of the backs from Mitty come our way. Fullback Kenny Jackson is the son of the former Spartan from the Mike Perez era. He can also play LB. Running back Thomas Reynolds, who broke his leg last fall, might be asked to walk-on or grayshirt.
Returning Spartan backs include:
Yonus Davis - (if he is granted a medical reshirt)
Patrick Perry - (coming off a knee injury that sidelined him the entire 2007 season.
Cameron Island - Played hurt the entire 2007 season.
Dominique Hunsucker - Probably will stick to defense.
Cameron Collins - Redshirted in 2007
The one back that I've heard good things about is Brandon Rutley from Martinez, CA. I believe he grayshirted this past season.
