There are four names that we know have given verbal commitments to SJSU, not two.
Long Snapper Matt Wigley from City College Of San Francisco is rated one of the best in the country, and he will fill a glaring need at SJSU with the departure of Grant Izakovic.
Flyback Peyton Thompson from Granite Bay runs a 4.4 time.
LB Wade O'Neal has great speed for someone that is 6-1, 235 lbs.
His teammate at Chino Hills, DE Tracy Pugh would have probably received some PAC-10 offers had he not suffered an injury in 2007.
Thus far, I see nothing wrong with those four recruits. Are they rated with 4 or 5 stars? No. But so what.
How many stars did Dwight Lowery, James Jones, Matt Castelo, Kevin Jurovich, John Broussard, Jerron Gilbert, Adam Tafralis, Yonus Davis, Christopher Owens, John Booker, Waylon Prather, and Jarred Strubeck have? Most of them weren't even listed on any of the recruiting sites prior to signing with SJSU, and those that were only had the obigatory one star, if that.
Lack of stars means absolutely nothing.
As for SJSU having fewer commits listed as compared to other schools; in all honesty, we don't really rate the attention by Rivals and Scout that other schools do because the number of SJSU fans that frequent those sites is far lower than schools like Fresno State, Boise State, and Hawaii (let alone schools from BCS conferences). Nobody at Scout and Rivals is bird-dogging SJSU recruiting like they do at other schools. Couple that with the fact that Tomey and his staff keep things under wraps, recruit under the radar players, and that SJSU has fewer scholarships avaailable this year, and one would expect the number of reported commits to be low.
I'm not really concerned about the recruiting this year, other than our having fewer scholarships available. If it will make you happy, I think come signing day, will get some players with 3 and 4 star ratings. We'll also sign some players with no stars. Just like Dwight Lowery did.
