I understand your points - but I disagree. It's not about the fact that we'll get a hot, young coach who'll keep us winning - it's about continuity and building a program that the community can have confidence in. Confidence that success will not cause constant turnover, dislocation and disruption.
Since 1977 Fresno State has had a total of 2 football coaches - Jim Sweeney and Pat Hill. SJS has had how many?: Lynn Stiles, Jack Elway, Claude Gilbert, Terry Shea, Ron Turner, John Ralston, Dave Baldwin, Fitz Hill, Dick Tomey. That's 9 coaches versus 2.
Maybe SJS' lack of continuity and inability to keep coaches is one reason why Fresno has had a winning program, a full stadium and great fundraising for over 30 years. Meanwhile, things are improving at SJS, but our hold on success is very tenuous.
We need Tomey to stay, because we need the continuity that he represents and it also represents credibility in a myriad of ways.
