The President's term is over in June. Is this connected to the conjecture about coach leaving? I don't know.

: Let's not forget that our beloved SJSJ Pres,
: who saved the day by putting his foot down
: and working to preserve the program, will be
: leaving soon. His tenure ends in a year (or
: two) and w/o him and Tomey...
:

: I'm done speculating on this. It's really
: bothering me to think that he might be
: leaving. Baldwin knocked off top teams in
: his last season and he left. That same year
: our baseball team went to the world series.
: We've sucked as$ everywhere since
: then...talks of pulling the plug on football
: were everywhere. Fritz was a sad era, not
: just an annoying one. If Tomey leaves, I'm
: not sure what's left of the fan base can
: take this anymore. The fan base increased
: because of Tomey. If he leaves, we're back
: to 6,000 a game until the plug gets pulled.
: W/o a big contract, we won't find another
: Tomey. It just won't happen unless Tomey
: stays and makes the job more attractive
: after at least 5 years. If leaves,
: football's finished after a few years. Maybe
: we'll go d1aa or something. But I can say
: this: we wouldn't be looking up anymore
: toward the future and watching Tomey work
: his magic. We'll be back to fighting off the
: likes of Kimmy Brent. How does that sound to
: you? How does that sound to the fan base?
: Good God Tomey please stay.
:
: Question for posters: Would you last another
: Fritz-type era?
:

: I hope you are right. When he does decide to
: leave, he needs to give Bowen plenty of
: notice and do it at the beginning of the
: season. That would allow the team to rally
: around him all season, let prospective
: replacements know the position is open and
: just allow us fans send him out the way he
: deserves.

: Tomey is a unique man in that he's been
: motivated to work on our program. He
: could've easily chosen to get paid a
: lucrative salary at a big named, successful
: uni. Let's be real. What Tomey's doing is
: more of a volunteer effort if you consider
: what the man's worth. But, the very fact
: that he chose to take this on in the first
: place makes me think that he's staying. From
: his perspective the job was a lot more
: difficult three years ago. The ball's
: starting to roll for him after three years
: of hard work...it just wouldn't make sense
: for him to quit now.

: I agree with 99. The head-coaching turnstile
: can't continue to spin. We need stability
: and a coach that'll stick aruond for at
: least 5-6 yrs b4 moving on. Call me Chicken
: Little, but if DT leaves now, the sky IS
: falling. Nobody, imo, on this current staff
: is ready to step-in and takeover.
:
: --Previous Message--
: IMO this wouldn't set us back just a little;
: it would be a devastation. Tomey has been a
: savior because he has made enormous
: sacrifices by coming here. 99.9% of coaches
: of his caliber wouldn't bother considering
: coming here for a second. Only a grizzled,
: seasoned and successful veteran can right
: this ship and if Tomey leaves, we're in
: trouble folks. A lot of fans will have had
: enough of this and will throw in the towel.
: Tomey has inspired the fan base in so many
: ways. He's one in a million and he mustn't
: leave until his job is finished. I'm praying
: that he chooses to stay.
:
: --Previous Message--
: I think a lot of that would depend on the
: replacement. I'm not too worried about x's
: and o's but more about recruiting and
: credibility. You know that many of our
: recent recruits came to SJS because of
: Tomey. Do I think we will revert to the Fitz
: and Bell days, no way because of the
: infrastructure that Bowen has in place and
: Tomey has instilled in the program. I just
: feel it will set us back a little and us, as
: fans don't need that right now.

: If Tomey did leave, it would not be
: "the
: sky is falling" type of news, but
: certainly not welcomed. The SJSU program is
: in considerably better shape than when Tomey
: arrived and will continue to improve, no
: matter who is coach next season. If we are
: looking at a coaching change, the focus will
: fall on AD Tom Bowen to have a replacement
: as soon as possible.

: SJSU football: Would Tomey take the Hawaii
: job?
: By Jon Wilner
: Tuesday, January 8th, 2008 at 10:20 pm in
: San Jose State, WAC. Five words of warning
: to Sparta:
:
: Be afraid. Be very afraid.
:
: Hawaii is open and I believe SJSU Coach Dick
: Tomey will give it serious consideration. I
: wouldn’t be the slightest bit surprised if
: he took the job.
:
: But not that job.
:
:
: I don’t think Tomey wants to be the Hawaii
: football coach for the second time, but my
: guess is that he’s thinking long and hard
: about becoming the UH athletic director.
:
: The Warriors just canned Herman Frazier for
: failing to keep June Jones and for general
: ineptitude (Frazier is well-liked but not
: considered very sharp).
:
: I mean, what could be better for Tomey?
:
: * He’s beloved at UH and in Honolulu for
: turning around the football program in the
: 1980s.
:
: * As the AD, he wouldn’t have to deal with
: the grind of coaching/recruiting. He could
: raise money from people who adore him.
:
: * For a turning-70-year-old, being the AD
: would be the perfect coast-into-retirement
: job.
:
: * To Tomey, Hawaii is home. He has owned a
: house there for decades.
:
: A hometown retirement job for a school that
: loves him, that wants him? Sounds pretty
: good.
:
: And Hawaii wants him in a big way — not the
: school, the state.
:
: Heck, a section of Tomey’s bio in the SJSU
: media guide is titled “A Revered Figure in
: Hawaii.”
:
: Consider what longtime Honolulu Advertiser
: columnist Ferd Lewis wrote: That Tomey
: should be the AD and the football coach:
:
: “But he can provide what UH needs most in
: the short term, stability and credibility
: until a timely transition can be made and he
: rides off into a celebrated retirement.
:
: “Never mind that he is coaching at San Jose
: State and has loyalty to the Spartans, who
: gave him a late-career opportunity.
:
: “His heart is here, where he has always
: maintained a home since leaving UH in 1986.”
:
: Obviously, it would be bad news for SJSU if
: Tomey left, and athletic director Tom Bowen
: is probably compiling aa short list of
: replacements.
:
: Meanwhile, Tomey isn’t talking (at least he
: wasn’t the last time I checked, late
: afternoon). He’s at the coaches’ association
: meetings, no doubt getting bombarded about
: the UH job.
:
: If he weren’t interested — in either the
: coaching or AD jobs — he’d have said so.
:
: Silence just might be bad news for the
: Spartans.

: One Response to “SJSU football: Would Tomey
: take the Hawaii job?”
: Spartan Phil Says:
: January 8th, 2008 at 11:39 pm
: I’m starting to think that DT is thinking
: about going back to Hawaii especially with
: no word from him or the athletic department
: as Jon mentioned. Coach, please stay, your
: work is not finished here yet. I think I’ll
: drop by the coaches meeting and see whats
: up.
