In spite of the pay, Jones would be making a lateral move - in fact, a less than lateral move. SMU is an also-ran mid-major in a mid-major conference that can barely draw 15k fans in a 32k seat stadium. While I'm no fan of Hawaii, it seems that a program that draws between 30k - 50k 8x - 9x a year and is the ONLY game in town, would be a much better professional platform.
Secondly, Jones is on a mission to prove that a no-tight end offense will work in the "big-time". SMU is nowhere near being bigtime. Jones should be holding out for a BCS conference gig where he will have ample opportunity to prove that his "theory" about offensive football is superior above all others.
The sports pecking order in the Metroplex:
1). Cowboys
2). Cowboys
3). Cowboys
4). Cowboys summer camp
5). Cowboys summer camp
6). Cowboys summer camp
7). Rangers baseball
8). Mavericks basketball
9). TCU football
10). high school football
15). SMU football
So Jones with an ego the size of Texas would go from being "King of the Hill" in Hawaii to being "Does SMU still play football?"
Bad move - if he does it, it's only cuz of the bread
