Now Jones had denied any interest, which is usually intrepreted as just the opposite. Maybe Jones is pl;aying it for a better contract with Hawaii. Hawaii AD Herman Frazier is already the most reviled sports figure in the islands and, if he now lost Jones,..

SMU will pursue Hawaii coach Junes Jones and is prepared to pay between $1.5-1.7 million per year to lure him to the Conference USA school, according to two people familiar with SMU's strategy.
Although Jones' contract expires after this year, Hawaii has yet to make a contract offer to the coach, who just completed his ninth season with the Warriors...
...After the Sugar Bowl, Hawaii athletic director Herman Frazier said he would not negotiate with Jones through the media and would not comment on SMU's interest in the Warriors' coach.
Former Miami coach Larry Coker and former Texas AM coach Dennis Franchione already have spoken with SMU about the job opening.

A source close to the SMU situation tells me Hawaii coach June Jones is the main target. He already has had a clandestine interview for the job.
SMU has yet to make a move on former Texas A&M coach Dennis Franchione and ex-Southern Miss coach Jeff Bowers, among others, even though both have been available. Why? Because SMU is waiting on Jones to finish the Warriors' trip to the Sugar Bowl, where unbeaten Hawaii will play Georgia.
It is believed that Paul Johnson was the main target, but he ended up leaving Navy to take the Georgia Tech job
