It is my understanding that Coach Tomey still has a lot of ties to high school coaches in Arizona, which explains why each year SJSU has prospects listed from there. Whether or not Emmanuel is the one responsible for recruiting in Illinois is hard to say. It's probable that he recruited the Chicago area while he was on staff at Purdue. No other member of Tomey's staff has recent ties to the Chicago area (of course, Ken Margerum was a Chicago Bear in the '80's).
I have noitced that there are more out-of-state prospects this year than in any of Tomey's previous recruiting seasons. That may be a direct result in the fundraising increases the Spartan Foundation has made the last couple of years. It costs SJSU more to award a scholarship to a player from outside of California than one that has CA residency.
The latest Chicago area recruit is QB Jason Kafka (6-2, 169) from St. Rita HS. He converted from WR to QB this past year, and threw for 1800 yards and 28 TD's. His brother Mike is a QB at Northwestern. It's possible SJSU could be looking at him as a potential WR. If QB is in his future, he would definitely benefit from a redshirt year, allowing himself to put some bulk on his thin frame (see photo). According to Scout, he lists his interest in SJSU as "high". No offer yet from the Spartans staff.
