Lloyd Carr says he does it to protect the kids. He's a "Bo" guy, so it's just continuing the line. On the other hand, you have USC which opens most, if not all of their practices to the public/media. It doesn't seem to have affected their ability to focus and win one bit. So, to answer your question, I like having access but I also believe the staff has the right to monitor what is let out. It's similar to a classroom, really. A professor can regulate which outsiders can sit in their class. A coach has the same responsibility.

they call the football program "Fort Schembechler". They have GA's police the local dorms and overpasses to make sure nobody is watching practice. It's been a source of humor for a long time because Michigan really doesn't play a very sophisticated brand of football.
