Posted by Spartan Phil on 9/2/2007, 11:37 pm, in reply to "obsevations from Saturday's loss" As far as the “D” goes, they were not the same attacking “D” that we saw win or loose last year. I now think Vedder and the rest of the safeties were a lot more valuable than we all gave them credit for last season. All the accolades were given to DL and Owens deservedly so but now; I am a bit worried with the safety position especially with no “D” line yet. They played way off the receivers and couldn’t tackle the way safeties should which was par for the night because I didn’t see many crisp tackles from anyone. All the DB’s were called upon to make too many tackles because of the way the “D” line was being blown off the ball. Again, the “D” play calling was suspect in my mind, no stunts, and no changes in the scheme or at least very little. All I can say is I hope the coaching staff was keeping things simple and close to the vest for Stanford and league games while making it easier to get a lot of kids some playing time and finalize the line up on both sides of the ball. I would hate to see that that was our best effort regardless of what Tomey says in his press conference.

From my prospective at the game from the second deck, the QB's did have some time to throw the ball and also had some good designed roll outs to give them even more time. In most cases, the ball either was off the mark or just plain dropped. In addition, a few were thrown poorly but should have been caught. Now, I don't know on some of those if it was the wide outs running the wrong routs or breaking them of early or not finding the seam in the zone that the QB’s were looking at or that the QB’s were just that bad. I tend to think it was a combination of everything. I also tend to agree the "O" line had no push and I didn't see a hole all night, hopefully that will change this week. I also was not impressed with the play calling on offense at all. Nothing over the middle , no screens to keep the "D" honest, no miss direction, nothing to the TE and only one deep throw that had it had a little air under it could have been six. Plain and simple, the QB's and wide outs are not on the same page yet.
As far as the roady itself, It was a great time, Spartan fans everywhere I went around Tempe, a very good Alumni Association party and one of the better out of state away game crowds we have had in quite a while. In that case, the program is starting to gain some ground. Now we need to start winning a few of these games to sustain that growth.
